What information does this Privacy Policy apply to?  This Privacy Policy applies to personal information that we collect through our brand websites, including our Carolina®, Gourmet House®, Mahatma®, Minute®, River®, RiceSelect®, Success® and Water Maid® brand websites (hereinafter, our “Websites”), as well as information you provide to us directly and information we collect from third parties.  For purposes of this Privacy Policy, “Websites” includes social media platforms.

What information does Riviana Foods Inc. collect?  We collect the following types of information:

  • Contact information (such as name, address, city, state, zip code, email address and telephone number)
  • Information that you choose to provide when signing up for promotions, clubs, and taste tests (such as your birth date, household information, income, marital status, and education)
  • Product preferences
  • Content you provide (such as photographs, videos, reviews, articles, comments, or any information you provide to us about your use of our products and services or regarding your workplace)
  • Non-personal information about your interactions with our website, such as your browser information. This information is collected from a variety of sources including information that you give us directly (for example during surveys, telephone calls, and Website registrations), information that we receive from our affiliated brands and other third-party sources, and information automatically collected when you visit our Websites (such as via cookies or web beacons).



How does Riviana Foods Inc. use my information?  We use your personal information to provide you with products and services and to support our core business functions, such as service requests, customer service, product safety and improvement, marketing, authentication, loss and fraud prevention, public safety, and legal functions.  We may combine all the information that we collect and we may enhance data that we collect with data obtained from third parties.   

How does Riviana Foods Inc. disclose my information?  We may disclose your information with affiliated companies and subsidiaries as well as with business partners for marketing purposes and when we believe that their products or services may be of interest to you.  We may also disclose your information to third party service providers or business partners who help us with our business functions.  We may disclose your personal information if necessary to protect the safety, property, or other rights of us, our customers, or employees, or when required by law.  We may also disclose your personal information with your consent.  If you visit our Websites from a country other than the United States, you consent to such cross-border transfers of personal data to the United States. 

What choices do I have?  We want to communicate with you about our brand and our products, but only in the ways that you agree to hear from us.  We will use a standard opt-out process for our marketing communications, meaning that you will receive marketing communications from us unless you tell us not to (for example, emails, newsletters, special offers or discounts, or new product announcements).  We participate in interest-based or behavioral advertising.  This means that you may receive advertising on our Websites or other websites that are tailored to how you browse or shop.

Riviana Foods Inc. respects your concerns about privacy and values the relationship we have with you. This Privacy Policy describes the types of personal information we collect about consumers, how we use that personal information, with whom we share it, and the choices available to consumers regarding our use of their personal information. We also describe the measures we take to protect the security of personal information we process, and how individuals can contact us about our privacy practices.


1.  What information does this Privacy Policy apply to?  This Privacy Policy applies to the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information from and about consumers by Riviana Foods Inc. on our Websites, through social media platforms, and through telephone, email, or other forms of communication, and other sources.  This Privacy Policy does not apply to third-party websites that may be accessible through hyperlinks on the Websites, which have their own privacy policies that we encourage you to review.  Linking to a third-party site does not mean that we endorse the site, their handling of personal information, any products or services described on the site, or any other material contained in a third-party site.  To the extent any linked websites you visit are not owned or controlled by us, we are not responsible for the sites’ content, any use of the sites, or the privacy practices of the sites.  Please review the privacy policy on those other websites to see how they handle your personal and non-personal information.

If you choose to use our Websites in any way, such as browsing or interacting, you agree with the terms of our current Privacy Policy as posted here. If you do not agree with this Privacy Policy, you should not use our Websites.  We may update or modify this Privacy Policy from time to time at our sole discretion and will note the date of last update on the top of this page.  We encourage you to visit this area frequently to stay informed, as your continued use of our Websites following the posting of changes to these terms means that you consent to such changes.

2a. What information does Riviana Foods Inc. collect?  We collect information that identifies, relates to, describes, is reasonably capable of being associated with, or could reasonably be linked, directly or indirectly, with a particular consumer or household (“personal information”). We may obtain personal information about you from various sources. We may collect personal information when you provide it on our Websites, our social media platforms, in telephone or email communication, in connection with our social networking, or at one of our events. We may also collect information that is about you but individually does not identify you, such as product interests. When you visit the Websites, we may also collect certain information about your device, internet connection, or usage by automated means or by using technologies such as cookies, web server logs, web beacons, and others.

2b. What types of personal information does Riviana Foods Inc. collect?  You may choose to provide personal information to us in a number of ways, such as when you participate in an offer or promotion or subscribe to a brand newsletter.  The types of personal information you may provide to us include:

  • Contact information (such as name, address, city, state, ZIP code, email address and telephone number).
  • Information that you choose to provide when signing up for promotions, newsletters, surveys, and taste tests (such as your birth date, demographic information, household information, or other types of information).
  • Your search queries on the Websites.
  • Product preferences.

  • Records and copies of your correspondence (including email addresses) if you contact us.

If you choose to interact with the Websites – such as by registering; applying for products or services; completing product reviews, taste tests, questionnaires, surveys, service contacts, requests for information, or posting User Contributions; entering sweepstakes or contests; or using social media platforms – Riviana Foods Inc. will collect the personal information that you provide as well as information about your use of our products and services.  Please note that your User Contributions are posted and transmitted to others at your own risk and are considered to be publicly accessible.  Additionally, we cannot control the actions of other users of the Websites with whom you may choose to share your User Contributions

We may collect personal information about you that you provide through telephone, email, text, or other communications.  In addition, we may collect information that is provided to us by social networks when you visit our social media platforms or use one of our social networking partner applications (such as your name, profile picture, likes, location, friend list and other information described in the social networking application sign-up page), if that content links to this Privacy Policy.

2c. What information does Riviana Foods Inc. collect automatically?  When you visit our Websites or our online advertisements, utilize our services, open an email that we send you, or interact with social networking applications, we may collect information about your usage, activities or actions on the Websites, and device by automated means or by using technologies such as cookies, web server logs and web beacons.

The information we collect automatically may include personal information, or we may maintain it or associate it with personal information we collect in other ways or receive from third parties.  It helps us to improve our Websites and to deliver a better and more personalized service, including by enabling us to:

  • Estimate our audience size and usage patterns.
  • Store information about your preferences, allowing us to customize our Websites according to your individual interests.
  • Speed up your searches.
  • Recognize you when you return to our Websites.

As set forth in more detail below, we may also collect information about your usage and browsing habits using various web-based technologies, which may include:

  • Cookies: Cookies are small text files that websites send to your computer or other Internet-connected device to uniquely identify your browser or to store information or settings in your browser. Your browser may tell you how to be notified when you receive certain types of cookies and how to restrict or disable certain cookies. Please note, however, that without cookies you may not be able to use all the features of our Websites. We use cookies to remember user preferences, to maximize the performance of our Websites and services, and to enhance your user experience. We may use cookies that are managed by Riviana Foods Inc. or by third parties for the purposes provided herein, including session management, authentication, Website analytics, advertising (including affiliate marketing but not cross-context behavioral advertising, content management, eCommerce, search, and social media integration.
  • Web server logs: In conjunction with obtaining information through cookies, our web servers may log details such as your operating system type, browser type, domain, and other system settings, as well as the language your system uses and the country and time zone in which your device is located. The web server logs also may record information such as the address of the web page that linked you to our Website and the IP address of the device you use to connect to the Internet.
  • Web beacons and advertising & marketing pixels: To control which web servers collect information described above, we may place tags on our Website or in emails called “web beacons” or “pixels.” These are computer instructions that link web pages to particular web servers and their cookies. Web beacons and pixels can be used to track the pages you view, links that you click, or other online behavior. These tools may also be used to measure the effectiveness of our email campaigns by identifying the individuals who open or act upon an email message, when an email message is opened, how many times an email message is forwarded, the type of software, device, operating system and browser used to deliver the email, and any URL accessed through our email message. Such tools are also used in connection with online advertisements on our Websites and on third party websites to collect the same types of information with respect to individuals who click on advertisements.  We use advertising and marketing pixels for remarketing and conversion tracking purposes.  The specific pixels and/or tags that we may use include but are not necessarily limited to those provided by Google and Google Ads Tag and Tag Manager, Meta and Facebook, TikTok, WordPress, Pinterest, Stack Adapt, Hotjar and others.
  • Session replay tools:  We may use session replay tools to better understand our users’ needs and to optimize this service and experience. Session replay helps us better understand our users’ experience, including how much time they spend on which pages, which links they choose to click, what users do and do not like, etc.  Some session replay tools may allow us to visually represent where users click, move, and scroll on our Websites.  This type of technology enables us to build and maintain our Websites with user feedback. Session replay tools may use cookies and other technologies to collect data on our users’ behavior and their devices. This includes a device’s IP address, device screen size, device type (unique device identifiers), browser information, geographic location, and the preferred language used to display our Websites.
  • Google Analytics:  We use Google Analytics to optimize our Services based on the traffic we receive and assist with marketing.   • Other: We may use other technology to collect information for the purposes listed below, including advertising, analytics, content management, social media integration, search, tag management, testing, and understanding our customers better.

Such technologies may permit collection of data elements such as demographic data, browser type, MAC address and other device information, IP address, pages visited, whether you have visited us before or are new to the Websites, activities conducted on the page (such as search queries), and the day and time of your visit.  We will ask for your consent before collecting location data.

We have configured our cookie management tool to honor opt-out preference signals sent by Global Privacy Control (“GPC”) within the browser. Due to technical limitations, the GPC signal is only honored within the particular browser. Beyond GPC, we do not currently respond to web browser “do not track” signals or other mechanisms that indicate your preference for not having information collected over time and across different websites or digital apps following your visit to one of our Websites.  You may also refuse or delete browser cookies.  If you refuse or delete cookies, some of the functionality of our Websites may be impaired.  If you turn off cookies, web beacon and other technologies will still detect visits to our Websites, but the information they generate cannot be associated with other non-identifiable cookie information and are disregarded. 3. How does Riviana Foods Inc. use my information?  We collect, maintain, and use your personal or non-personal information for the following purposes:

  • Establishing and verifying the identity and eligibility of users;
  • Opening, maintaining, administering, managing, and servicing users profiles;
  • Conducting special events, sweepstakes, surveys, programs, taste tests, contests, and other offers (and communicating with you about such events);
  • Analyzing and improving our products, services, or Website (including developing new products and services; improving safety; managing our communications; analyzing our products; performing market research; performing data analytics; and performing accounting, auditing and other internal functions);
  • Providing users with product, service, or company updates;
  • Marketing and advertising our products or services as well as products and services of third parties, including affiliates, subsidiaries, and business partners (if you do not want us to use your information in this way, check the relevant box located on the form on which we collect your information or adjust your user preferences, as applicable);
  • Responding to your inquiries or comments, or contacting you as necessary;
  • Operating and communicating with you about our social networking applications
  • Maintaining the security and integrity of our systems;
  • Fulfilling any other purpose for which you provide it or to which you consent;

We may also collect and store information locally on your device using mechanisms such as browser web storage (including HTML 5) and application data caches.

We may use the personal information we have collected from you to enable us to display advertisements to our advertisers’ target audiences.  Even though we do not disclose your personal information for these purposes without your consent, if you click on or otherwise interact with an advertisement, the advertiser may assume that you meet its criteria.

4. How does Riviana Foods Inc. share my information? 

We may share your personal information as necessary to fulfill the purpose for which you provided it, for any purpose disclosed by us when you provide the information, or with your consent.

We may share your information with our affiliated and subsidiary companies and our distributors. We may also disclose your information to third parties who help us with our business functions, such as service providers or suppliers, and with business partners.  Such third parties are not authorized to use or disclose your personal information except as necessary to perform services on our behalf or comply with legal requirements (for example, entities that provide web hosting and marketing services).  

We may use third party web analytics services such as Google Analytics on the Websites or on social medial platforms. The service providers that administer these services use technologies such as cookies, web server logs, web beacons, and pixels to help us analyze how visitors use the Websites. The information collected through these means (including IP address) is disclosed to these service providers, who use the information to evaluate use of the Website.  

We also may contract with third-party advertising networks that collect IP addresses and other information using cookies, web server logs, web beacons, and pixels on our Websites and emails; on third-party websites and emails; and on our advertising placed on third-party websites. They use this information to provide advertisements about products and services tailored to your interests (including for companies not affiliated with us). You may see these advertisements on other websites. This process also helps us manage and track the effectiveness of our marketing efforts.

In addition, we may share your information if necessary to protect the safety, property, or other rights of us, our customers, or employees, or when otherwise required by law, court order, or legal process.

We reserve the right to transfer personal information we have about you in the event we sell, transfer, or engage in another transaction involving all or a portion of our business or assets, or undertake another form of corporate change.  Following such a sale, transfer, or transaction, or corporate change, you may contact the entity to which we transferred your personal information with any inquiries concerning the processing of that information.

5.  What about Riviana Foods Inc.’s social media platforms?  Our Websites’ web pages may embed plugs-ins, widgets or other apps of various social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and others.  An example of such a plug-in is Facebook’s “Like” button.  When you encounter those embedded objects, your internet browser may make a direct connection to the social media platform’s service and may share with the social media platforms information such as which of our Websites you have visited.  Our Websites may also be made available through third party social media platforms.

Your use of services on third party social media platforms are governed by the privacy statement and other terms of use for that third party social media platform, until such information is shared with us, and then such information is also subject to this Privacy Policy.

6. Is my information secure?  Riviana Foods Inc. has implemented measures designed to secure your personal information from accidental loss and from unauthorized access, use, alteration, and disclosure. All information you provide to us is stored on our secure servers behind firewalls. Any payment transactions will be encrypted.

The safety and security of your information also depends on you. Where we have given you (or where you have chosen) a password for access to certain parts of our Website, you are responsible for keeping this password confidential. We ask you not to share your password with anyone. [We urge you to be careful about giving out information in public areas of the Website like message boards. The information you share in public areas may be viewed by any user of the Website.]

Unfortunately, the transmission of information via the internet is not completely secure. Although we do our best to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee the security of your personal information transmitted to our Website. Any transmission of personal information is at your own risk. We are not responsible for circumvention of any privacy settings or security measures contained on the Website.

7. Does Riviana Foods Inc. collect information from children?  Riviana Foods Inc. does not intentionally collect personal information from children under 13 years of age, and children under age 13 should not submit any personal information to us or on the Websites or through any of their features, nor register to use the Websites, make any purchases through the Websites, or use any of the interactive or public comment features of the Websites.  If we become aware that a child has provided us with personal information without parental consent, or a parent or guardian of a child contacts us through the contact information provided below, we will delete the child’s information from our databases.  If you believe we might have any information from or about a child under 13, please contact us at info@riviana.com.

8.  What choices do I Have? How can I contact Riviana Foods Inc.?  We want to communicate with you about our brand and our products, but only in the ways that you agree to hear from us.  You may opt out or unsubscribe from our newsletters, special offers or discounts, or other marketing communications by following the unsubscribe instructions in any email or other communication you receive from us.  After doing so, you will not receive future promotional emails unless you agree to when you open a new account, enter a contest, or sign up to receive newsletters or emails.  You may also continue to receive non-marketing communications about your account or purchases that you have made.  Please allow up to 2 weeks to process your request.

We do not engage in cross-context behavioral advertising, but you may receive advertising on our Websites or other websites that are tailored to how you browse or shop.  Riviana Foods Inc. is committed to working with consumers to obtain a fair and rapid resolution of any queries, complaints, or disputes about privacy. 

If you have submitted information to Riviana Foods Inc. and you would like to have it deleted from our databases or corrected, or if you have any other questions or comments regarding our privacy practices, please contact us via email from the applicable brand or website.  You may also have any of your personal information corrected or deleted by exercise your applicable consumer privacy rights as described below.

 

9.  What about my rights under California and other state privacy laws?

The California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (collectively, “California Privacy Law”), as well as other state consumer privacy laws, provide their residents with additional privacy rights and disclosure rights regarding our use of their personal information. We have included this additional information below.

Retention of Personal Information. We retain personal information related to marketing activities for as long as you accept marketing communications from us. For personal information that we collect and process for other purposes described above, we retain such personal information for no longer than for the period necessary to fulfill the purposes outlined in this Privacy Policy and as otherwise needed to address tax, corporate, compliance, litigation, and other legal rights and obligations.

Your State Privacy Rights.

The Right to Know and to Confirm, and the Right to Data Portability

  • You have the right to request that we disclose certain information to you about our collection and use of your personal information over the past 12 months (the “right to know” and the “right to confirm”). Once we receive your request and confirm your identity, we will disclose to you:
  • The categories of personal information that we collected about you.
  • The categories of sources for the personal information we collected about you.
  • Our business or commercial purpose for collecting or selling that personal information.
  • The categories of third parties with whom we share that personal information.
  • If we sold or disclosed your personal information for a business purpose, two separate lists disclosing:
    • Sales, identifying the personal information categories that each category of recipient purchased; and
    • Disclosures for a business purpose, identifying the personal information categories that each category of recipient obtained.
  • The specific pieces of personal information we collected about you (also called a “data portability” request).
    • If you submit a data portability request, we will provide you with a copy of your personal information in a common and portable format that you may transfer to another organization of your choosing.

The Right to Delete

You have the right to request that we delete any of your personal information that we collected from you and retained, subject to certain exceptions (the “right to delete”). Once we receive your request and confirm your identity, we will review your request to see if an exception allowing us to retain the information applies. We may deny your deletion request if retaining the information is necessary for us or our service provider(s) to:

  1. Complete the transaction for which we collected the personal information, provide a service that you requested, take actions reasonably anticipated within the context of our ongoing relationship with you, or otherwise perform our contract with you.
  2. Detect security incidents, protect against malicious, deceptive, fraudulent, or illegal activity, or prosecute those responsible for such activities.
  3. Debug products to identify and repair errors that impair existing intended functionality.
  4. Exercise free speech, ensure the right of another individual to exercise their free speech rights, or exercise another right provided for by law.
  5. Comply with specific laws, such as the California Electronic Communications Privacy Act (Cal. Penal Code § 1546 et. seq.).
  6. Engage in public or peer-reviewed scientific, historical, or statistical research in the public interest that adheres to all other applicable ethics and privacy laws, when the information’s deletion may likely render impossible or seriously impair the research’s achievement, if you previously provided informed consent.
  7. Enable solely internal uses that are reasonably aligned with your expectations based on your relationship with us.
  8. Comply with a legal obligation.
  9. Make other internal and lawful uses of that information that are compatible with the context in which you provided it.

We will delete or deidentify personal information not subject to one of these exceptions from our records and will direct our service providers to take similar action.

The Right to Correct Inaccurate Information

You have the right to correct any inaccurate personal information about you that we have in our possession (the “right to correct”).  Once we receive your request and confirm your identity, we will disclose to you the specific pieces of personal information that we have collected about you.  You will then have the opportunity to direct us to correct the pieces of information which you believe are inaccurate.

We may deny your request to correct if we believe the updated information is incorrect or is being used for any fraudulent or deceptive purpose.

The Right to Restrict Sensitive Personal Information Processing

You have the right to restrict our processing of your sensitive personal information (the “right to restrict”).  Once we receive your request and verify your identity, we will cease the processing of your sensitive personal information for the purpose of inferring characteristics about you.  Please note that we may continue to process your sensitive personal information for other purposes consistent with this Privacy Policy.

The Right to Opt Out of the Processing and Sale of Personal Information

You have the right to direct us to not process your personal information for targeted advertising and to not sell your personal information at any time (the “right to opt-out”). Once we receive your request, we will no longer use or process your personal information for the purpose of providing targeted advertising to you based on your activity and interests.  We will also no longer sell (as that term is defined by relevant and applicable state law) your personal information to third parties for targeted advertising purposes.

Personal Information will be collected directly from you through our service provider, ApplicantStack, via your resume, as well as from authorized third parties (e.g., people you have named as your references, previous employers, schools, public authorities, or public resources), subject to the requirements of applicable law.

In general, you are required to provide the Personal Information, except in limited instances when we indicate that certain information is voluntary. Not providing your Personal Information may prevent Riviana from carrying out recruiting and hiring activities that impact your potential employment with us. 

2. For what purposes and on what bases do we use and process Personal Information?

Riviana will process Personal Information for the business purposes described in the tables above.

3. Under what conditions is Personal Information transferred, shared, or disclosed to third parties?

You should expect that the company may transfer your Personal Information to third parties as follows:

  • Within the Riviana group of companies. We share your Personal Information amongst the Riviana group of companies (our subsidiary and affiliated entities), as necessary for the processing purposes, and in particular to conduct recruiting and hiring activities, and respond to and comply with requests and legal demands. If you transfer to another company within the Riviana group of companies, we may send, at the request of your new employer, your personnel file to your new employer, so that it may administer your new employment relationship;
  • With certain acquiring or acquired entities. If the Riviana business for which you submitted your Personal Information, in relation to your interest for an employment position, is sold or transferred in whole or in part or if Riviana is acquiring and integrating another entity into the Riviana entity or business for which you applied for an employment position, your Personal Information may be transferred to the other entity prior to the transaction (e.g., during the diligence phase) or after the transaction, subject to any rights provided by applicable law, including the laws of the jurisdictions where the other entity is located; and

Note that any access to your Personal Information is restricted to those individuals that have a need to know to fulfill their job responsibilities. 4. For how long does Riviana retain my Personal Information?

Your Personal Information is stored by Riviana, and/or our service providers, strictly to the extent necessary for the performance of our obligations and strictly for the time necessary to achieve the purposes for which the Personal Information is collected, in accordance with applicable data protection laws. When Riviana no longer needs to use your Personal Information, we will remove it from our systems and records and/or take steps to properly render it unintelligible so that you can no longer be identified from it (unless we need to keep your Personal Information to comply with legal or regulatory obligations to which Riviana is subject). Riviana will retain your Personal Information in accordance with the applicable Riviana record retention schedule, unless retention for a longer period is warranted due to a legal requirement, including the need to support or defend a legal claim that is not yet barred by the applicable statute of limitations.

If you accept an offer from Riviana, your Personal Information will be retained for the duration of your employment with Riviana and as necessary in accordance with applicable law and the applicable Riviana record retention schedule.

With your consent, in the event that you are not offered a position with Riviana or decline an offer from us, we will retain your Personal Information for a period of up to three years for U.S. residents or one year for non-U.S. residents, on the above mentioned systems, so that we may inform you of other positions that we believe may be suitable to you. Personal Information retained for this purpose will be processed, used, disclosed and stored in accordance with the policies laid out in this Notice.

5. What are my rights?

The Right to Know and to Confirm, and the Right to Data Portability

  • You have the right to request that we disclose certain information to you about our collection and use of your Personal Information over the past 12 months (the “right to know” and the “right to confirm”). Once we receive your request and confirm your identity, we will disclose to you:

  7. Enable solely internal uses that are reasonably aligned with your expectations based on your relationship with us.
  8. Comply with a legal obligation.
  9. Make other internal and lawful uses of that Personal Information that are compatible with the context in which you provided it.

We will delete or deidentify Personal Information not subject to one of these exceptions from our records and will direct our service providers to take similar action.

The Right to Correct Inaccurate Information

You do not need to create an account with us to submit a request.  We will only use the personal information provided in the request to verify the requestor’s identity or authority to make it.
